Jacob HESTON was born 20 May 1713. He married Mary WARNER.

Jacob and Mary Heston had at least three sons--Thomas. Edward and Jesse. Thomas was a
Colonel during the Revolution. He was born April 4, 1753, and married Hannah Clayton on June
25, 1775. In or about 1781, in connection with Thomas Carpenter, grandfather of the late Judge
Thomas P. Carpenter, of Camden, N. J., he purchased of the Stangeer Brothers the glass works
which they had established in 1775. The place was known as Heston's Glass Works until some
years after, when, at the suggestion of a member of the colobrated Gloucester Fox Hunting Club,
on the occasion of a convival gathering at Colonel Heston's house, after a hunt and capture of
reynard, it was named Glassboro, and has ever since born that name. The works are still in the
possession of Colonel Heston's descendants--the Whitneys, his daughter Bathsheba having
married Captain Eben Whitney. It is related of Captain Whitney that he was cast ashore with his
vessel at or near Cape May, and in passing through the neighborhood of the glass works, on his
way to Philadelphia, he saw and became enamored of Colonel Heston's daughter Bathsheba. He
married this lady and settled there, engaging in the glass business with his father-in-law. The
Whitney brothers (Thomas Heston and Samuel A.,) sons of Captain Eben Whitney, became
proprietors of the works in 1837, and they have carried on the business successfully ever since.
They are now the largest glass works in the country. The senior proprietor, Thomas Heston
Whitney, died on May 4, 1882, aged 69. Few men led a more active business

life than Thomas Heston Whitney, and none took a more "arnest and patriotie interest in the
concerns of the country, and although disappointed in his political aspirations--having been
defeated as the Whig candidate for Congress by Hon Nathan T. Stration in 1850--he never faltered
in his love for his political principles, and when treason struck at the life of the nation he gave
liberally of his abundant means to the cause of the Union and in support of the old flag. Others
may have been more ostentations, but in effective, earnest work Mr. Whitney stood pre-eminent.
He was appointed to represent New Jersey on the Centennial Commission in 1876, but declined
the honor. His son, John P. Whitney, is now at the head of the glass works, at Glassboro. N. J.

Edward W. Heston, son of Jacob (7) and brother to Thomas, was also a Revolutionary patriot,
holding a lientenant-colonel's commission. He founded the village of Hesonville, now included
within the corporate limits of Philadelphia. The old Heston mansion, in which he lived for sixty
years, was situated in the vicinity of George's Hill, Fairmount Park. It was torn down about 1877.
Edward W. Heston was a member of the Pennsylvania Legislature, and for eight years was a
State Senator. He was also appointed a Judge of the
