MATTHEW MAYHEW (Thomas,3 Robert,2 Simon1), b. abt. 1550, resided in theparish of T., and is described in his will as a "yeoman" by which term ismeant to be conveyed, legally speaking, a freeholder next under the rankof "gentleman"; for being descended from the line of a third son of anestablished family he had not the quality that then attached to theeldest branch.
Nevertheless he was a man of substance and left to his heirs an estatevalued at about seven thousand dollars in cash, besides his realproperty, as estimated by our present standards. He was buried 26 Feb.1613­14 at T. His marriage to ALICE BARTER Oct.1587 is on record

He came to Nantucket from the vineyard, having half a share of land onthe Island of Nantucket granted him, to act in the capacity of ashoemaker.
He is said to have represented the county in the Gen. Court. He died inBoston in 1716, aged 68 yrs; 6 mo, and his widow, Sarah, d. at Nantucket,Dec. 19, 1729.

Richard with three of his children removed to Nantucket, where more wereborn unto him. His eldest daughter, Sarah became the wife of EleazerFolger, brother of Dr. Franklin's (Benjamin Franklin) mother. Some of hisdescendants intermarried with Coffins, Macys, Starbucks and otherwell-known names of that sea-girt isle, greatly multiplying andcontinuing prosperous down to our own time.
