ISAAC CHASE, (Thomas1), the first of the name to settle on Martha'sVineyard, was descended from the Chase family of the parish of Chesham,Buckinghamshire, through Aquila, (a) his grandfather, bapt. 14 Aug. 1580.Richard,(b) his great grand-father, bapt. 23 Aug. 1542 (who m. JoanBishop 16 May 1564) and Thomas (c). Isaac2 was b. abt. 1 Apr. 1650, or1647 (according to his gravestone), and came first to Tisbury in 1674bringing with him the trade of a blacksmith as well as his predilectionsfor the Quaker religion. [See also Annals of Tisbury: Sketches of theEarly Settlers.]
He m. (1) MARY PERKINS of Hampton, N. H. (sister of his fellow emigrantto the Vineyard, Jacob Perkins) 20 Feb. 1673, by whom he had no issue. She d. soon after and he m. (2) MARY TILTON (sister of another fellowemigrant, Samuel Tilton (3) [*See Note.]) 5 Oct. 1675, the ceremony beingperformed by Rev. John Mayhew. She was b. 1658-9 and d. 14 June 1746being the mother of all his children. His Wil1 12 Feb. 1721-22 was pro.July 1727, and his large landed estate, comprising nearly the whole ofthe present village of Vineyard Haven, became an inheritance for hischildren. [He is buried at Crossways Cemetery.]

The progenitor of the Chase family of Martha's Vineyard, was born inHampton, N. H., April 1, 1650, the third son of Thomas and Elizabeth(Philbrick) Chase. The family genealogies state that Thomas came fromCounty Cornwall, England, to New England, and was the son of Aquila Chaseof the Chesham, County Bucks family, whose pedigree extends back severalgenerations. In what way Isaac Chase came to be interested in thisdistant island is not known, but the neighboring town of Salisbury,Mass., had already
furnished many settlers for Nantucket, men of Quaker faith, and throughthis source it is probable that his knowledge of the Vineyard wasacquired. At the age of 24 he came to Tisbury to settle (1674), but thetownsmen refused the privilege to him for some reason at that time.Possibly it was because of his religious beliefs, which were of theQuaker doctrinal variety. 'The townsmen of Tysbury,' so reads the record,'do not give unto Isack Chace of Hampton liberty to settle in the town.'[TisburyRecords, 8. We may surmise that they finally gave him permissionto inhabit at Homes Hole, in the uttermost part of the town,

The first record of the granting of a license for a tavern on theVineyard is found under date of March 26, 1677-8, when Lieut. Isaac Chaseof Homes Hole was granted a license to keep 'A Publike house.' Thefollowing is the full record:

'Isaack Chase of Holmses hole is admitted to keep a publike houseof Entertainment & to sell liquor &c by Retail except to the Indians andthis to continue for two years at ten shillings per annum.'

This house, situated in Vineyard Haven, then Homes Hole, was theresidence of the progenitor of the Chase family on the Vineyard. Thelocation of it is not accurately known, but it was about fifty yardsnorth of the old Company Place barn, near which, in early days was theferry stage for the boats that plied between Falmouth and Tisbury.Following the custom of so many elsewhere, Landlord Chase combined thecalling of an inn-keeper with that of a ferryman. many miles from thedwellings of any settlers. He was of Hampton in October 1673 (Norfolk Co.Deeds).] However he must have overcome this refusal before long, as wefind him in less than two years making purchases of land in the townlimits.

The Chase Manhattan Bank began in 1799 as a local water company in NewYork
City. A group of New York civic leaders, led by Alexander Hamilton andAaron
Burr approached the New York City Council and suggested creating a private
water company called The Manhattan Company. With the surplus capital from
the water company The Bank of The Manhattan Company was created. In 1877,
another bank called the Chase National Bank had been founded, in New York,
by John Thompson. The 75-year old Thompson, a former school teacher and a
specialist in currency values, named the bank after Salmon P. Chase,Abraham
Lincoln's Secretary of Treasury who had led the fight for passage of the
landmark National Banking Act of 1863. The marriage of The Bank of
Manhattan, the nation's 15th largest, and the Chase National Bank, the
nation's third largest, occurred on March 31, 1955 and the Chase Manhattan
Bank was born. (Information derived from The Chase Manhattan News.)

William Worth was one of the first settlers of Nantucket Island. He
was born in England about 1640(See THE WORTHS OF NANTUCKET) and came to
Nantucket as a "halfshare" man in 1662 to pursue the occupation ofsailor.
In 1655 a law had been passed by the Mass. Colony that, "no Quaker be
entertained by any person within the government under the penalty of five
pounds for each default or to be whipped". This law had something to dowith
William Worth, Thomas Macy, Christopher Hussey and Richard Hussey going to
Nantucket Island.
According to GENEOLOGY OF THE WORTH FAMILY, Cornelia Worth French,Gen.
Wm. Worth was the only Worth to acquire sufficient renown for his name to
find a place in history. Gen. Taylor was Commander-in-Chief at Montereybut
Gen. Worth performed much the most distinguished part in the battle. Gen.
Scott was the Commander in the Mexican campaigh but Gen. Worth led the van
from the landing at Vera Cruz to the taking of the city of Mexico. Hecalled
himself a Whig, but toward the end of the mexican war a difference arosebe-
tween him and Gen. Scott. Gen. Worth's friends allege that Gen. Scottbecame
envious of his renown. Pres. Polk's cabinet approved of Gen. Worth'sconduct
and censured Scott. As a result Gen. Worth became a Democrat. The changein
his politics was imputed to a desire to become a candidate for thepresiden-
cy and had a bad influence on his fame. He died of cholera. He was bornon
Nantucket and his descendents still live in N. Y. A statue erected to his
memory stands in Union Square in N. Y. City. Fort Worth, Texas, WorthCoun-
ty Georgia, and Lake Worth, Florida, were named for him.
